The Hydra String Quartet came into being during the coronavirus lockdown in Amsterdam; four musicians inspired by the lush sound and aesthetics of the Golden Age of Hollywood, when many of the world’s finest musicians and composers collaborated to create what became legendary film soundtracks and recordings of jazz and classical music.

Though only recently formed, the quartet has been engaged to perform in several live-streams and to record live on national radio. During the summer the quartet played a series of concerts in Copenhagen and performed in a number of Amsterdam’s iconic venues including the Uilenburger Synagogue, the Waalse Kerk, the Beurs van Berlage and the National Maritime Museum.  The quartet has also enjoyed collaborating with some of Holland’s top  soloists.

Alongside the established literature for string quartet, these four musicians are building a varied repertoire of rarely-heard classical masterpieces in addition to their own arrangements of well known film and television scores.  Despite the turmoil in the cultural landscape, Hydra is an enterprising string quartet with several projects in development: commissions of works by young composers, multi-disciplinary collaboration with international artists, a tour of Southern Europe in the summer of 2022 and many more.
